인터넷에서 많이 보았던 이곳 섬에 가보려고 계획하고 있습니다. 언젠가 SLR클럽에서도 남의 사진을 등재하고 본인이 찍었다고 해서 문제가 된 그곳, 바로 St. Maarten 입니다. 중앙아메리카에 위치하고 있으며 이곳 공항 이름이 Princess Juliana International Airport 라고 합니다.
이곳을 가려고 항공기 편을 알아보니 상당히 복잡하군요. 대충 루트는 이렇습니다.
출국편은 부산 -> 나리따 -> 뉴욕 -> St. Maarten
부산에서 나리따까지 대한항공으로 2시간 비행, 나리따에서 4시간 대기후 콘티낸탈 항공 CO8편으로 12시간 40분 비행하여 뉴욕으로 들어갑니다. 뉴욕에서 스탑오버, 뉴욕시내 구경하고 이틀후 역시 콘티낸탈 항공 CO861편으로 4시간 10분 비행하여 St. Maarten 도착예정입니다. 편도 비행시간만 약 19시간 가량되는 머나먼 길이군요.
그곳에서 약 5일 머물 예정이며 랜트카를 빌려 돌아 다닐 생각입니다.
사전 조사를 해보니 섬 크기는 제주도의 약 1/60정도로 작은 섬이라고 하는데 그중 반은 네덜랜드 령이고 나머지 반은 프랑스 령이라고 하는군요. 작은 섬을 그것도 중앙아메리카에 있는 섬을 유럽의 두나라가 지배하고 있다는 것이 신기합니다.
사진에서 보는 해변이 Maho beach 라고 하는데 바로 옆에 Princess Juliana International Airport 라는 공항이 있습니다. 작은 섬이라 볼거리가 없는줄 알았는데 나름 관광지가 상당히 많군요.
guanabay beach is the best beach in St. Maarten/St. Martin for surfing enthusiasts, and is recommended for strong swimmers only, since there is usually a heavy undertow. If this sounds like its for you, bring your own picnic and cooler - there are no services. Beautiful breaking waves make great photographs. Bring a friend.

The surf is usually very calm, as a small reef protects the beach. Many yachts use the bay as an anchorage and provide an attractive foreground for the gorgeous sunsets, which can be observed from here.
Little bay is
Located on the southern coast of St Maarten, just around the corner from Great Bay, this small but pretty beach is well protected by the outcrop of Fort Amsterdam right on the edge of Philipsburg.
This makes it an ideal spot for children, and a selection of beach equipment from snorkeling gear to jet-skis means there is plenty to do for all the family. Along with the two hotels, there is a beach restaurant which serves a variety of light snacks and full meals as well as the essential beach cocktails!
Cupecoy beach is Dutch St. Maarten's semi-official nude beach. Sandstone cliffs give Cupecoy beach a dramatic golden backdrop, unlike any other beach on the island. Protected from the wind, this beach is perfect for those who enjoy "baking" in the sun. Dipping in the Caribbean Sea often or just lying on the edge of the rolling surf is recommended. If you're wearing nothing but your birthday suit, be sure, at least, to wear plenty of sunscreen!
simpson beach, At one time, this area was famous for its families who made their living by fishing. There are still a few fisherman who shove off, hours before dawn, in search of "the one that got away". Today, residential and vacation homes dot this mile long beach, as well as a few small resort hotels. Half of Simpson Bay Beach runs parallel with The Princess Juliana International Airport runway. This beach is never crowded and is perfect for watching planes and sunsets.
beach_explorer, One of St. Martin’s most exquisite features is the Caribbean’s largest landlocked lagoon. For yachts, the Simpson Bay Lagoon is accessible through two channels, one on the French and one on the Dutch side. Drawbridges open several times per day to allow for boat traffic. The lagoon serves as an important shelter for boats during times of stormy weather. Most marine services and yacht harbors are located here.
Happy Bay might just be the most beautiful beach on St Martin, and it’s seclusion adds to the charm. There is presently no road leading to Happy Bay and all visitors must leave their cars at Friars Bay and hike for about 15 minutes on a trail.
This beach is popular on weekends with locals ‘in the know’, but offers almost at any time privacy.
Orient Beach is St. Martin's flagship beach and is often refered to as the "French Riviera of the Caribbean". This expansive one mile beach is home to numerous beach bar/restaurants, who offer various menus, from formal French to pizzas, burgers and local fare. No matter what the cuisine, its party time all the way, from one end of the beach to the other. Bikini Beach, Coco Beach, Kakao Beach, Wakiki Beach and Kontiki Beach are the most established beach restaurants with great food, great service and even greater ambiance. You can swim and sunbathe unencumbered; it is "clothing optional". Remember to wear plenty of sunscreen.

귀국편은 역으로 St. Maarten -> 뉴욕 -> 나리따 -> 부산 루트입니다.
귀국길에도 뉴욕에서 하룻밤 머물고 다음날 출발할 예정입니다.
혼자가는 멀고 낮선 이국땅이라 살아 돌아 올수 있을까? 내심 걱정도 됩니다만 지금부터 준비를 차근차근해서 다녀오겠습니다. 출발은 대충 3월 중순경으로 잡고 있습니다.
